Abstract

The article presents a systematic review of technological machines and devices, as well as technologies for grinding and finishing leather and the dermal tissue of fur. A grinding machine has been developed that enables the processing of leather and fur semi-finished products while ensuring the full utilization of abrasive materials. Owing to the possibility of reversing and rapidly replacing the abrasive sheets on the working drum, conditions are created for carrying out the grinding process under an optimal operating mode depending on the type and properties of the leather raw material. In addition, a rational substantiation of the geometric, kinematic, and control parameters of the machine equipped with a grinding drum contributes to improving its economic efficiency and ensuring reliable operation. This study analyzes the strength of the working drum of a drum-type leather grinding machine. The drum is considered as a cylindrical shaft rotating under load. During leather grinding, friction forces and, in some cases, non-uniformly distributed loads act on the drum surface. Since the drum operates continuously in a rotating mode, its wall is subjected to centrifugal force caused by rotation, contact pressure with the leather, bending induced by loads transmitted to the drum axis, and torsional stress caused by the torque transmitted through the shaft. Therefore, the drum must be analyzed as a complex mechanical system. The computational and theoretical study of the manufactured grinding drum showed that, at a rotational speed of \(n=1200\) rpm and an average design radius of \(r=0.145\) m, the circumferential normal stress is approximately \(2.61\) MPa. Verification of the computational model in the limiting case showed that, in the absence of rotation, \(\omega \to 0\), the circumferential stress tends to zero. It was also established that the stress depends linearly on the material density and quadratically on the angular velocity and radius. The obtained computational results confirm the consistency of the adopted analytical model with the parameters of the manufactured grinding drum.
